When it is indicated
- suspected stroke, to distinguish ischaemia from haemorrhage;
- head injury;
- sudden, very severe headache;
- patients who cannot undergo MRI.
To study the arteries of the neck and brain, CT is completed with CT angiography.
CT or MRI?
CT is fast and widely available, but involves a small dose of radiation and is less detailed than MRI for studying many neurological diseases. The choice of test depends on the clinical question: this is why it is useful for it to be requested and interpreted by a specialist.
