Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

MRI is the reference test for studying the brain. It uses no ionising radiation and provides highly detailed images of nervous tissue.

What it is used for

How it is performed

The scan usually takes 20 to 45 minutes, lying inside the scanner. In some cases an injection of contrast (gadolinium) is needed. Before the scan it is important to report pacemakers, implanted devices, metal fragments, claustrophobia, pregnancy and kidney problems.

When needed, the study can be completed with MR angiography of the intracranial and neck vessels.

The value of a neuroradiological reading

Dr. Bonacchi is a specialist in both Neurology and Diagnostic Radiology. This dual expertise makes it possible to choose the imaging protocol best suited to the clinical question and to interpret the images in light of the symptoms and the neurological examination.

You can also request a review of an MRI already performed (second opinion), in person or online, sending images and reports in advance from the Book page.
